Patbingsoo Korean Dining House with its first outlet at Plaza Singapura is on a roll, with 3 NEW branches at Jurong Point JP2, Northpoint City and VivoCity. Yes, three.

Some diners may have the impression that Patbingsoo Korean Dining House is a dessert place that serves only bingsu, but there is much more to that.

There is a wide selection of savoury offerings, largely inspired by the popular street food in Korea, so you get anything from the hearty Budae Jjigae (Army Stew), Tteokkochi (Rice cakes in sweet red chilli sauce) to a creative Seafood Sundubu Pasta.

The branch at VivoCity is located at basement 2, a short walk to the restaurant area after you exit from Harbourfront MRT station.

Compared to the typical Korean family style restaurants, this is more fun and casual.

Here are some of the latest creations and best sellers you can expect from Patbingsoo Korean Dining House:

Tteokbokki Jjigae ($38.90 with mussels, $35.90 with pork or beef)
The first thing you may notice about this Korean rice cake stew are the fanciful heart and star shaped tteokbokki on top of the ingredients.

I initially thought they were there for colours and the ‘instagram-effect’… until I took a bite in one.

These chewy rice cakes were actually filled with cheese, yam or pumpkin, so there was some sweetness or savouriness within.

Other than a choice of mussels or beef/pork, other components included fish cake, spam, sausages, mushroom, egg and vegetables, which would promise a filling meal to a table of 3 to 4.

I thought that the soup was slightly to the sweet side, so it is recommended to add more cheese to balance off the taste.

House Special Ramyeon ($12.90)
This turned out to be my favourite, most likely due to the rich, spicy soup which was quite shiok and not too diluted. The kimchi added a layer of mouth-watering tanginess.

I would say this is a Level 2 in terms of spiciness, with smoking hot noodles and minced pork, spam, kimchi and seafood.

Rolling Cheese Pork Ribs ($38.90)
This is probably Patbingsoo Korean Dining House’s most recognisable dish – the Rolling Cheese Pork Ribs.

Presented in a traditional Korean iron-cast pan, what you get are succulent thick pork ribs arranged on top of a combination of premium mozzarella and cheddar cheese.

The entertaining part starts when the cheese mixture melts over the heater, and the server will use a one-of-a-kind ‘slapping’ technique to stretch and roll the cheese.

The cheese is then wrapped around each individual pork rib – which is available in either spicy gochujang or non-spicy version.

Compared to just dipping the meat into say a melted-cheese dip, this helped to spread the cheese out more evenly.

While the focus has always been on the ribs, not to be ignored are the sides of fries, crunchy cabbage, sweet corn in cream, and sweet chopped pineapple to contrast with the spiciness.

Patbingsoo Bulgogi Set ($11.90)
A simple yet quite ingenious dish. The eating process almost felt like I was having Korean BBQ, yet without that fuss and mess.

The plate was presented with cooked pork or beef bulgogi, kimchi, rice balls and lettuce.

All you need to do is to wear the glove, wrap them all together to your preference, and chomp it down. On another note: the pork bulgogi reminded me of bak kwa.

Cheese Kimchi Fried Rice ($11.50)
If you are looking for a meat meant for the individual, you can give this Kimchi infused fried rice with mozzarella a go. There could be more robust kimchi flavours though.

Chicken Skin ($7.90)
A snack that would go well with Soju or Makgeolli – crispy chicken skin with savoury fries, drizzled over with nacho cheese sauce.

Mango Sticky Rice Bingsoo ($17.90)
The table went ”Wahhhhh….” when this dessert was carried to the table.

There was a cut fresh mango sticking up at the top.

Inspired by the famous Thai dessert, on top of the Bingsoo was whipped coconut cream. As you dig further into the shaved mango-flavoured ice, you get some sticky rice below for a surprise.

The other two recommended instagram-worthy Bingsoo are the fruit-based Bibim Patbingsoo and cheese-sauced Apgujeong Bingsoo. Funky.

Soda Popsicle ($7.90)
You have heard of Soda Popsicle, but this is popsicle IN soda.

Coming in flavours of Melon or Strawberry, this looked like a typical fruity soda with cream, until you realised there was a popsicle for you to further stir the flavours in.

If that is not intriguing enough, then make way for the Beer Popsicle ($11.90).

Taro Latte ($6.90)
Ice blended lattes with flavours of Taro Latte, Green Tea Latte, Sweet Potato Latte, and Cereal Latte, topped with whipped cream.

Makkoli Mix – Lychee, Mango or Honey ($9.90)
The Koreans drink Makkoli (or Makgeolli) because it contains lactobacilli and probiotics, which means it is good for digestion and bolstering the immune system.

Plus it is definitely more fun to drink.
